Overview

Core•Mark's native app faced several challenges primarily centered around user experience and functionality. Users reported issues with the app's stability, barcode scanning, an unintuitive interface, and difficult navigation which made it difficult to quickly find information or complete tasks,

I joined the Lextech team to lead their UX Design efforts and utilize my expertise in user experience design. My role was to assist in redesigning and enhancing Core•Mark's native app by designing for new functionality, improved usability, and streamlined ordering and inventory management processes for the organization and it's customers.

" Chris was instrumental in helping our design project move forward. His experience with both design systems and design strategy were immediate value adds. His research acumen was another huge help as the project demands ramped up."

Research & Ideation

This project had a very short time constraint so we had to move as quickly.

After conducting informational interviews with the stakeholders and reviewing pre existing test data, my goal was to design a personalized user-centric workflow and outcome that empowered customers to effectively achieve their long and short-term goals to drive maximum benefits and enhance their overall experience.

During these meetings, I familiarized myself with their latest iOS offerings exploring various user flows, functionalities, layout variations, and nomenclature. My goal was to identify opportunities for improvement that we could later validate through prototyping and testing.

Additionally I enlisted existing customers for interviews to better understand needs, sentiment, behaviors, motivations, and pain points.

Ideation

The design process isn't always linear and when it isn't I’m a big fan of starting with what you know. I already had some ideas in mind on how to make the existing design function and look better based on my past experience on other projects.

During the information gathering phase, I immersed myself in analyzing what I consider to be best-in-class apps within the same or similar industries. I closely observed how these apps addressed common problem areas and implemented effective solutions. I then incorporated the most effective approaches regarding functionality and layout variations into the initial design concepts and user flows.

This always helps when rapidly designing low-mid fidelity protoypes with small time constraints. Additionally it allows design to pivot quickly when validating flows, interactions, and concepts to reach client buy in.

Design

Putting it all together is always exciting.

Based on feedback from interviews, demos with advisory boards, and stakeholder input the design was refined and iterated upon to increase capabilities, enhance usability, functionality, and visual appeal.

The visual design focused on aligning with Core-Mark's voice and tone ensuring the app's interface felt consistent with the brand's identity and audience.

After full sign off the project was then handed off for implementation.

Lextech Takeaways

This project was a reminder how pivotal a role requirements play in ensuring timely project delivery by providing a clear roadmap and framework for the entire design process.

Additionally change is never easy for any company. Utitlizing a change management strategy by involving the client in all stages gave them a sense of ownership by getting their fingerprints on the design which garnered trust.

Finally, this was a another reminder that sometimes the struggle is when you find the best solution.
